***

That night Fips lay awake for a long time before he decided to get up and look after his sister, who was sleeping on the same floor two doors down.

“Fanny,” he whispered at her door. “Fanny? Are you awake?” He opened the door a little. It always smelled good in here. Perfume and soap. “Fanny?”

Fips noticed a movement and the rustling of bedding. “Fips? What’s the matter?”

Now he saw her. Just a shadow in her bed. The face was a blurry blob framed by dark hair.

“I can’t sleep.”

“Come in and close the door.”

Fips didn’t have to think twice.

Fanny turned on the bedside lamp and sat up in bed. The straps of her spaghetti top had slipped. She looked beautiful and sexy.

With a beating heart, Fips approached the bed. He hadn’t been here at night since they were children. Was it okay to sit on the bed?

Fanny reached out. Fips grabbed her hand and let her pull him onto the mattress. His sister radiated a pleasant warmth, and her face cream made her skin shine. Fips was disappointed when she let go of his hand.

“What’s wrong?” Her pure face was beautiful without makeup.

“I can’t sleep. I always have to think about it.”

“About what?”

“What we’re doing with that woman down there. How long is she going to stay alive like this?”

Fanny shrugged. “That depends.”

“Don’t you feel sorry for her?”

“Do you pity her?”

Fips swallowed the lump down his throat and nodded. “Yes. Of course. She’s a human being. That—that’s not human!”

“She’s not one of us, Fips. We have to think of ourselves, not of any strangers.”

“Can you do that, Fanny? Because I can’t.”

“You hurt them. Are you going to say you don’t enjoy this?”

Fips tried to think about it. He was a rapist, a murderer, a monster. Nevertheless, he had a conscience. He was not indifferent. And when it was fun, it hurt even more afterward.

“Sometimes I enjoy it. And I’m even sorrier about that.”

Fanny kept silent. Was she thinking about it, or was she just tired?

The break was too long for Fips. “Fanny?”

“I know what you mean,” she finally said, to his surprise.

“You—you know?”

Fanny nodded. “It’s the same with me.”

“You feel sorry for them?”

“They … I … we …”

“Though you laugh at it?”

Fanny laughed quietly and dryly. “You can learn that.”

Fips thought about it. She was right. Of course! You could learn to laugh.

“Mama will cut the first piece of her tomorrow,” Fips whispered. “And Dad will let her live on. Do you really want to see that? Do you want to sit at the table and eat her meat while she watches you do it?”

“You know I don’t,” Fanny protested.

“Then you have to do something about it!”

“Why me?” She was angry and all the more beautiful. “Why did you come to me with it? You know what happens if we resist Dad! You’ve been in this damn dungeon often enough!”

“I came to you because you’re the only one I trust. Do you understand that, Fanny? I’m not sure if you’re on my side, but I know you’d never betray me.
